What is tooth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry dental treatment whose objective is to lighten the tone of the teeth and eliminate dental stains in order to acquire a whiter and brighter tone. This dental procedure has become one of the most requested in recent years. That is why we want to share with you this information that will surely be useful if you plan to carry out this procedure.

It is very important that if you want to perform tooth whitening, you go to a dentist who is trained to handle whitening agents, follow the appropriate diagnostic protocol indicated by the professional, and plan the procedure and maintain the results. It is essential that the dentist thoroughly knows the indications and the contraindications of the different teeth whitening techniques so that they can be transmitted correctly to you as a patient.

Types of teeth whitening

There is a classification for teeth whitening depending on the tooth to which you want to apply this procedure.

Vital teeth whitening

There are two different techniques for this type of whitening.
  • Dental whitening applied in the dental office: this procedure is carried out by applying a whitening agent based on 35% hydrogen peroxide, which can be activated by a light source. It is necessary to previously carry out adequate prophylaxis and check that the oral cavity is healthy. After this step, the area to be treated is isolated, so as to avoid contact of the bleaching agent with the periodontal tissues and subsequently the bleaching agent is added. It is essential to follow the whitening system manufacturer's instructions for satisfactory results.
  • Outpatient whitening with the supervision of your dentist: this type of whitening consists of the concentration of carbamine peroxide is 10%. This procedure is performed from home, under the instructions of your dentist. In the same way as in the previous whitening, it is necessary to carry out a prophylaxis and an oral revision before the treatment. A splint is made to measure for you in which the bleaching agent will be applied, in order to avoid any possible contact with the periodontal tissues.

Whitening in non-vital teeth

The reason for discoloration in non-vital teeth is usually due to the presence of blood or bacterial products within the canals (pulp necrosis). This type of whitening is performed in the dental office and consists of the removal of all bleaching agents and existing necrotic tissue from the pulp chamber in endodontic teeth.

There are two methods of whitening non-vital teeth.

  • Immediate technique: consists of activating the mixture of sodium perborate with hydrogen peroxide at 35% through a hot instrument. The result obtained is seen instantly.
  • Outpatient technique: the mixture made with sodium perborate (Amosan powder) and 35% hydrogen peroxide (Superoxol) is applied, it is taken to the cavity of the pulp chamber and a temporary filling is placed on the surface. This is a longer process.
A combination of both techniques can also be carried out.
