What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a pathology that affects the tissues that protect and support the teeth. It consists of 2 phases: in the initial phase it appears as Gingivitis: accumulation of bacterial plaque and bleeding gums. In the second phase it presents as Periodontitis: inflammation and loss of tissue and bone around the dental roots. This can result in anything from extreme tooth mobility to tooth loss. The fundamental cause of periodontal disease is poor dental hygiene, which favors the formation of bacterial plaque and tartar below the gum line, however there are other risk factors that favor it such as smoking, hormonal changes in women, diabetes and other diseases, as well as the action of certain medications.

How do we cure
periodontitis?

The symptoms are inflammation and bleeding of the gums, bad breath, pain when chewing, tooth sensitivity, tooth mobility and receding gums. The treatment of this disease is performed with closed curettage procedures or when the damage is deeper, open curettage is a surgical procedure. Closed curettage is performed with ultrasonic devices and dental laser for periodontics. Open curettage is a surgical procedure aimed at cleaning deep areas of the dental roots and the bone found around them, in addition to eliminating the bacterial infection present.

This disease should be treated with a periodontist, since a timely diagnosis and treatment, could prevent or delay tooth loss, will greatly improve your oral health.
