How is a dental implant performed?
A dental implant surgery is an out patient surgery performed in stages, with healing time between procedures. The process of placing a dental implant involves multiple steps, including:
- Removal of damaged teeth
- Preparation of the jaw (graft), when needed
- Placement of the dental implant
- Bone growth and healing
- Pillar placement
- Positioning of the artificial tooth
The whole process may take a few months from start to finish. Much of that time is spent on healing and waiting for the growth of new bone in the jaw. Depending on the situation, the specific procedure performed or the materials used, certain steps can sometimes be combined.
